Our Curriculum

From September 2014, the new National Curriculum for state schools in England became statutory. On this page, you will find planning documents which detail the expectations of the new curriculum in English and Maths.

As a result of the changes, we have chosen to follow the Chris Quigley Essentials Curriculum which sets out essential coverage, learning objectives and standards which are required for all subjects. One of the primary reasons why we have chosen to adopt this curriculum is because it emphasises the importance of developing the depth of children’s learning. In essence, this means providing children with increased cognitive challenge, allowing them to apply the skills which they have learnt independently in a range of contexts rather than moving them onto the next skill when they have not truly mastered it. Such thinking is encapsulated in the scenario below:

At Hoyle Court, we aim to challenge our children to become independent, well-round individuals who take ownership of their learning and become deep thinkers. Moreover, we want our children to be able to apply their knowledge and skill set in a range of contexts within school and real life.

British Values

From November 2014, schools must promote British values. At Hoyle Court we see British values as:

  • democracy;
  • the rule of law;
  • individual liberty;
  • mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith

This Guide for Parents was created by Rising Stars and provides information about the new curriculum. Clear and simple objectives for each year group show what children are now expected to learn in English, maths and science. Click on the image to view the document.

 

  

 

Wednesday 11th March was our calculation meeting for parents explaining the methods and strategies used by our children when solving multiplication and division questions. Click to the right to download the presentation which shows the progression of these methods from year 1 to year 6. We also had an opportunity for parents to get hands on with the maths equipment.

The Maths Progression document has all the objectives for Mathematics in Years 1 to 6 organised by strand so that you can quickly see how the objectives progress in each area.

 Creative Curriculum

At Hoyle Court we believe a cross-curricular approach makes learning more purposeful. Below you can find our creative curriculum long term plans. These outline the links we make between various foundation subjects and also links that will be made through English and maths.

Each topic heading is designed to be broad which allows scope for independent learning by following the children's interests. When appropriate, our topics begin with a hook and end with a great finale to give children an opportunity to present what they have learnt.
